Descendants of Harrison Smith

Unfortunately I do not have the time to do research on all Aunts, Uncles and Cousins. So I will be glad to share information on everyone that I can, but Betty Smith is the lineage that this will follow and also from my perspective and my understanding of the dynamics of her family. The research will continue and as I find more information will provide updates. Of course Men are easier to research, because the Women took on their married names. So as you will see for some of the Women I have very little if any information. If I could locate marriage records that of course would help! I have made every attempt to be as accurate as possible. If you find any mistakes please by all means let me know. CelticKyss@live.com

The 1890 United States Federal Census' were destroyed in a fire, so these records are unavailable.

Thank You's

The Smith family is one that I did not know very well. Betty Smith was my mother and left when I was four years old. I didn't see much of her growing up, so my memories are vague. My Dad always told me about how beautifully she could sing, and that back in Illinois she played the piano and sang on the radio. I like to think I got my love of music from her.

Thank you to my Aunt Judy, for answering questions and listening and being so patient. Through this research I have found a 2nd cousin-in-law, Nancy Davis who has been tirelessly working with me on this. She is the wife of Jim Davis who's mother Leona Vada Smith-Davis is my Great Aunt. I found out today that Jim Davis passed away on August 11, 2009. RIP

Many thanks to the Jefferson County, Illinois Genealogy Site https://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~iljeffer/

Thanks to the People on the Rootsweb/Ancestry.com message boards who have taken the time to actually go to the library and look up information. It is greatly appreciated.

Through this effort I have seen my grandfather for the first time. I have spoken to my great uncle still living at the age of 90. Spoken to my great aunt at the age of 80, and her husband who is also helping with this effort. I have learned many things about my mother that I never knew.

First Generation

i. Harrison Smith was born in Illinois about 1819. His wife’s name is unknown as the 1850 census lists her as M. Smith. What we do know about M. Smith is that she was also born about 1819 in Illinois and she either died between 1854 and 1860 or they were divorced.

As of the August 17th 1850 census Harrison was living in District 11, Wayne County, Illinois with his wife and children. It shows him as a farmer.

September 15, 1854 Harrison Smith purchased Section 32 of Township 1-N, Range 5-E of Wayne County. The sale shows that payment was by cash.

As of August 9, 1860 Harrison was living with his children in Township 1 S Range 5 W, Wayne County, Illinois,it does not show whether he was married or widowed. The 1860 census record shows that there was a Frances George age 69 living with them and I believe this to be M. Smith’s mother and this leads me to believe that M. Smith died between 1854 and 1860.

In 1862 Harrison Smith signed up as a volunteer for the Illinois Militia. However, he was never called up and never served.

After 1860 I am unable to locate Harrison Smith on any census record, so I believe he died before 1870. I cannot locate any death records or headstones.

The Smith family settled in the Brush Creek/Hickory Hill section of Wayne County. It is believed that Thomas Smith born around 1798 was Harrison Smith’s father, however this is not proven but he was in the right place at the right time, so this would make him a likely suspect. Research continues.

Harrison Smith and his wife had five children that I could locate on census records:

ii. Elisha - born March 1842
ii. Martha A - born about 1847
ii. Louisa E - born about 1849
ii. Isaac Bane - born about 1851
ii. Frances A - born about 1854

Second Generation
i. The children of Harrison Smith and M. (George?) Smith are:

ii. Elisha Smith was born March 1842 in Illinois. He died January 3, 1912 in Wayne County, Illinois. Elisha is buried in Jacob’s Chapel Cemetery in NW Wayne County, Illinois.

About 1863 he married Sarah Jane Campbell. Sarah was born January 1842 in Tennessee and died before 1930 in Mount Vernon, Jefferson County, Illinois. I do not find her on any census records after 1920.

They had seven children that I could locate in Census Records.

November 9, 1862 Elisha signed up for the Illinois Militia Reserves.
December 21, 1863 he signed up again for the Illinois Militia Reserves.
March 3, 1865 Elisha enlisted as a Private in Company K, 61st Infantry Regiment of Illinois for 3 years for the Union.
March 4, 1865 fought at Murfreesboro, TN.

As of July 25th 1870, Elisha and his family were living in Mount Vernon, Jefferson County, Illinois. He was a farm laborer and Sarah was keeping house.

June 21, 1880 we find Elisha and his family living in Hickory Hill, Wayne County, Illinois. Elisha was a farmer and Sarah was keeping house.

June 11, 1885 Elisha filed to receive his Civil War Pension, it was deemed invalid and he did not receive any money.

According to the Census of 1900 Elisha and his family were living in Farrington, Jefferson County, Illinois. Elisha was a Farmer and rented the land that he farmed. Sarah was at home keeping house. Neither could read nor write neither had attended school.

In the Census of 1910 it shows that Elisha and Sarah had been married for 47 years. They had a total of 8 children and only 5 were living. As I said earlier that I could only locate seven children on the census records, so a child was born and passed away in between the census records being taken.

Elisha died January 3, 1912.

February 11, 1913 Sarah applied for the Civil War Pension of Elisha Smith based on being a Widow, it was granted.

In the Census of 1920, I find Sarah living with Isaac and his wife and children. She was 78 at the time and it shows that she was widowed.

ii. The children of Elisha Smith and Sarah Jane Campbell are:

iii. Elizabeth A – born about 1864 in Illinois.
iii. William Amos – born July 1866 in Illinois.
iii. Martha Jane – born about 1869 in Illinois.
iii. Fransina – born about 1871 in Illinois.
iii. Isaac Benton – born June 8, 1876 in Mount Vernon and died June 17, 1943 in Mount Vernon, Illinois.

ii. Martha A. born about 1847 in Illinois.

The census of August 1850 shows Martha is 3 years old, so she was born about 1847. It shows her living with her father and mother in District 11, Wayne County, Illinois.

The census of August 9, 1860 shows her as 13 years old, living with her father and siblings and Frances George (possibly her maternal grandmother) in Township 1 S Range 5W, Jefferson County, Illinois.

At this time this is all the information I have for Martha A. Smith.

1850 United States Federal Census

ii. Louisa E. born about 1849 in Illinois.

The census of August 1850 shows Louisa is one year old, so she was born about 1847. It shows her living with her father and mother in District 11, Wayne County, Illinois.

The census of August 9, 1860 shows her as eleven years old, living with her father and siblings and Frances George (possibly her maternal grandmother) in Township 1 S Range 5W, Jefferson County, Illinois.

At this time this is all the information I have for Louisa E. Smith.

ii. Isaac Bane born June 1851, (however the 1900 census shows his birth year as 1856) in Wayne County, Illinois. Date of death unknown, still researching.

Isaac married Amanda Forth January 24, 1873 in Marion County, Illinois. Amanda Forth was born in 1857 and died after October 31, 1890 from the measles. They had four children.

Amanda's parents were John Forth and Frances "Fanny" Burkitt

The census of 1860 shows Isaac is nine years old and living with his father, siblings and Frances George (possibly his maternal grandmother) in Township 1 S Range 5 W, Wayne County, Illinois

The census of 1870 shows Isaac is seventeen years old and living as a farm hand with Joseph and Lovina (Forth) Burkitt in Brush Creek, Marion County, Illinois.

Lovina Forth is the daugther of John Forth and Barbara Slover half sister to Amanda Forth.
This probably explains how Isaac met Amanda Forth.

The census of 1880 shows Isaac is twenty six and living with his wife Amanda, twenty one and their two children in Romine, Marion County, Illinois.

In 1890 Amanda (Forth) Smith passed away. Due to the fact that the 1890 census' were destroyed in a fire, I do not know if he remarried after her death prior to 1899.

The children of Isaac Bane Smith and Amanda Forth Smith are:

iii. John Harrison - born May 9, 1875
iii. Judah - born 1878
iii. Rose - born 1884
iii. Charles - born October 31, 1890

On August 14, 1899 Isaac Smith married Mary Alice Forth (Amanda's younger sister) in Jefferson County, Illinois. Mary Alice was born June 1856, date of death unknown.
Mary Alice "Allie" brought to the marriage two children (twins) from a previous marriage to Pleasant G. Pollard.

These children are:
Chas Pollard - born June 1886
Minnie Pollard - born June 1886

The 1900 census shows Isaac living with Mary Alice and two of his children with Amanda and his two step children. They were living in Farrington Township, Jefferson County, Illinois.

After 1900 I am unable to locate census records for Isaac Smith or Mary Alice Forth Smith. I am unable to locate any death records or headstones in cemeteries. Research continues.

ii. Frances A. born about 1854 in Wayne County, Illinois.

The census of August 9, 1860 shows her as six years old, living with her father and siblings and Frances George (possibly her maternal grandmother) in Township 1 S Range 5W, Jefferson County, Illinois.

She does not appear on the 1870 census, so she may have married or passed away by 1870. She would have been sixteen years old.

At this time this is all the information I have for Frances A. Smith.

1860 United States Federal Census

Third Generation
ii. The children of Elisha Smith and Sarah Jane Campbell are:

iii. Elizabeth A – born about 1864 probably in Wayne County, Illinois, date of death unknown.

The 1870 census shows her as "Betsy" and she is six years old and living in Township 2 Range 3, Jefferson County, Illinois. She is living with her mother and father and her brother "Amos".

The 1880 census shows her age as sixteen and living at home with her parents in Hickory Hill, Wayne County, Illinois.

That is all the information I have for Elizabeth. Research continues.

iii. William Amos – born July 1866 probably in Wayne County, Illinois, died July 6, 1942 in Jefferson County, Illinois.

January 18, 1888 William married Eva A. Yeargin in Mount Vernon, Jefferson County, Illinois. Eva was born september 1873 in Mount Vernon, Jefferson County, Illinois. Date of death March 9, 1944 in Jefferson county, Illinois.

Eva A. Yeargin is the daughter of Elijah M. Yeargin and Alice Staley - Yeargin

The census of 1870 shows William is six years old and living at home with his parents and sister Betsy in Township 2 Range 3, Jefferson County, Illinois.

The census of 1880 shows that William is not living with his parents. He would have been fourteen years old. It would not surprise me if he was working as a farm laborer on another family's farm, seems to be that is what they did back then. However I have not been able to locate him on any 1880 census.

The 1900 census shows William is thirty three years old and living in Mount Vernon, Jefferson County, Illinois with his wife. They now had a total of six children.

In the 1900 census it shows that William, wife and children were living with fifteen other people. After researching, what I found was that they were living in what was called an Almshouse.

By 1839 the Almshouse method of public welfare was introduced in which a building would be built on
county land and pauper labor would farm it.

The 1900 census shows that William was the Supervisor of the "Poor House". It shows that he had a white servant named Mulnac Media.

The 1910 census shows that William and his wife and family were living in Mount Vernon, Jefferson County, Illinois. The now had a total of seven children. William was still supervising the Poor House. However something different about the 1910 census compared to the 1900 census is that in 1900 it listed the people living in the poor house as "almshouse". 1910 it listed them as "inmates".

The 1920 census shows William and his family living in Mount Vernon, Jefferson County, Illinois. He is now fifty one years old and he is a Real Estate Agent. He now has a total of 8 children.

The 1930 census shows that William and his family living in Mount Vernon, Jefferson County, Illinois. He shows his age as sixty three. He is a superintendent over a farm. His mother-in-law Alice Staley - Yeargin is living with them. It shows Alice Yeargin as a widow.

William Amos Smith died July 6, 1942 and is buried in the East Salem Cemetery in Jefferson County, Illinois. His wife was layed to rest with him March 9, 1944.

The children of William Amos Smith and Eva A.Yeargin are:

iv. Walter - born November 1888, died 1923.
iv. Earl - born Jan 1889
iv. Pearl - born July 1891
iv. Homer - born April 1894
iv. Harry - born July 1897

The 1910 census shows him living in Orchard, Wayne County, Illinois with his wife Bunie and three children. It shows that he is working as a laborer at a saw mill. The census shows that they had six children and that four were living. However, on the census it only lists three children living with them.

The 1920 census shows Levi living in Mount Vernon, Jefferson County, Illinois with his wife and four children. It shows that he was working as a farm laborer.

Levi Smith and Bunie V. had four children that I could locate on census records:

Fourth Generation
iii. The children of John Elvis Smith and Ada Leona Palmer are:

The Smith Family was very poor and could not afford Headstones for those that passed away. Leona Vada Smith married Joe Davis. Joe Davis worked at a cement plant and as a family member passed away he would make their headstone which was a square piece of concrete with their name and date of birth and death on it. As times got better and it was affordable the headstones were replaced with professional made headstones. The only headstone not replaced is Marcine Lloyd's headstone. It is still in Sursa Cemetery in Mount Vernon, Jefferson County, Illinois.

Fifth Generation
iv. The children of Lee Smith and Lena Evadene Wilson are:

v. Betty - born September 2, 1938 in Mount Vernon, Jefferson County, Illinois. She married Robert McCormick July 22, 1956. No divorce ever filed.

Robert L McCormick is the son of Louis McCormick and Grace (Unknown).

Betty Smith married Living Hayes September 14, 1957 in Corinth, Mississippi. They moved to Smith, Texas shortly after they were married. Smith, Texas is where their son was born. They then moved back to Mount Vernon, packed up Betty's Mother, Father, sister and brother and moved to central California. March 7, 1961 Betty Smith filed for divorce from Eddie Paul Hayes, but was not finalized until November 20, 1967.

Living Hayes is the son of James Chesley Hayes Jr. and Madge Ouida Beal.

They had a son and a daughter:

vi. Living Hayes - born April 3, 1958 in Smith, Texas.
vi. Living Hayes - born Apirl 11, 1959 in Lompoc, Santa Barbara County, California.

Betty Smith married Harold Eugene "Dan" McDaniel on September 21, 1961 in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico. Dan McDaniel was born February 23, 1933 in Iola, Allen County, Kansas. June 2, 1966 their marriage was annulled in Ventura, Ventura County, California because it was never registered in the United States. It is also believed that there was never a divorce between Betty and her first husband (Living Hayes), making the marriage to Dan McDaniel not valid. Research shows that Betty Smith filed for divorce from her first husband, however it was not finalized until November 20, 1967.

Harold Eugene McDaniel is the son of Loyd Ralph McDaniel and Velma Mae Finch.

They had a daughter and a son:

vi. Living McDaniel - born March 12, 1962 in Santa Paula, Ventura County, California.
vi. Living McDaniel - born January 31, 1965 in Santa Paula, Ventura County, California.

Betty Smith then married Kenneth L. Chambers January 9, 1968 in Las Vegas, Clark County, Nevada. It appears that Kenneth L. Chambers was born in 1938. Story goes and according to divorce papers filed Kenneth L. Chambers was sent to Terre Haute State Prison for murder. I do know for sure that he was in Terre Haute State Prison, whether it was for murder or not, I have no idea.

While Betty was married to Kenneth Chambers, she checked herself into Camarillo State Hospital for Drug and Alcohol rehabilitation. During the stay there she was involved with a man named John Peters and got pregnant. This was early 1969. Once she left Camarillo State Hospital she lived with a man named Vern T. Kirkham. On Nov. 1, 1969 she gave birth to a son. Vern T Kirkham was put on the son's birth certificate as the father.

I do not find any marriage records or divorce records for Betty Smith and Vern T. Kirkham and it is believed that they were never married.

1974 Living Smith (Lee Smith's son) and his wife petitioned the State of California for adoption of Betty's son. It was granted in 1975.

January 4, 1975 Betty Smith married Edward T. Thomas in Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara County, California. Edward Thomas was born about 1927. No divorce ever filed.

January 10, 1976 Betty Smith married Donald D. Tietjen. Don Tietjen was born October 22, 1933 in Missouri and died July 2, 1993 in Bakersfield, Kern County, California.

Betty filed for divorce from Kenneth L. Chambers June 16, 1976, the divorce papers were sent to Terre Haute State Prison in Terre Haute, Indiana. Divorce was granted.

Betty Smith had battled prescription drug and alcohol addiction for all of her adult life. Dan McDaniel her third husband had committed her to Camarillo State Hospital for rehabilitation. She had checked herself several times into Camarillo State Hospital for rehabilitation. She was in and out of half way houses trying to straighten her life out. Nothing seemed to work for her.

Betty Smith died February 21, 1990 in Sacramento, Sacramento County, California. Cause of death, heart failure due to a drug overdose of Soma and Tylenol with Codeine. The Coroner estimated that she had taken aproximately 100 pills. Donald Dale Tietjen gave her the pills. I was the last of her children to talk to her the day that she died.

There was no funeral for Betty, she had alienated all her children. Her oldest son has her ashes. My younger brother and I and our father Dan McDaniel met at Lake Shasta. My brother and I tossed 5 flowers into the lake, one for each of her children. Our father insisted that we have closure with our mother.
